The future capital has quietly played host to a record 64,000 domestic and foreign visitors over the extended Idul Fitri holiday, the largest footfall it has seen since Jokowi left office last October.
he country’s future capital in East Kalimantan has become a popular tourist destination, hosting tens of thousands of domestic and foreign tourists during this year's extended Idul Fitri holiday.
A total of 64,000 people visited Nusantara in the 10 days from March 27 to April 5, according to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority.
It was the biggest crowd of visitors since the government of Joko “Jokowi” Widodo opened parts of the multibillion-dollar city to the public at the tail end of his presidency in September 2024, following years of closed-door construction.
“On April 1 [the second day of Idul Fitri], there were 8,219 visitors, while on April 2 there were 12,958 visitors. The peak came on April 3 with 14,105 people,” Thomas Umbu Pati, the city authority’s deputy for development control, said in a press release on Saturday.
Thomas said domestic tourists hailed from various provinces while foreign tourists came from Brunei Darussalam, China, Malaysia and South Korea, as well as European countries.
“Nusantara is open as wide as possible to the public who want to see the city’s development for themselves,” he said.
