A light intensity earthquake of magnitude 4.1 struck the West Java city of Bogor and nearby areas on Thursday night, causing some minor damage to several homes, the latest shallow earthquake to hit the province that is home to the active Citarik Fault.
4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the West Java city of Bogor and surrounding areas at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, causing minor damage to a number of houses with no reported deaths.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake’s epicenter was located on land, at approximately 2 kilometers southeast of Bogor city on Mount Salak and a depth of 5 km. The agency recorded its exact coordinates as 6.62 degrees south latitude and 106.80 degrees east longitude.
The tremor was classified as a shallow crustal earthquake and was caused by activity along the Citarik Fault, as confirmed by source mechanism analysis.
Running from Bekasi at its northeastern end through Bogor to Pelabuhan Ratu in the southwest, Citarik is a sinistral strike-slip fault, meaning the tectonic blocks along its right-hand side move horizontally to the left.
This movement is supported by data from the BMKG’s seismic sensors in Dramaga and Citeko in Bogor regency, which detected strong shear waves with high-frequency components.
The tremor was felt across the regency as well as the West Java cities of Bogor and Depok, registering between III and IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, causing weak to light shaking. The BMKG said the shaking was noticeably felt indoors, with vibrations likened to the passing of a heavy truck.
