The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) have lifted the tsunami warning previously declared in six provinces in the eastern part of the country, which was first issued following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that jolted Russia’s far east on Wednesday.

The earthquake in Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia on Wednesday morning triggered a trans-oceanic tsunami that was projected to be capable of bringing widespread destruction to coastlines across the Pacific Ocean. The wave prompted authorities, including the BMKG, to issue tsunami advisory status.

In Indonesia, the agency placed 10 regions under tsunami advisory status, the lowest level in the national three-tier tsunami warning system, as the waves were not expected to exceed 50 centimeters once they reached Indonesia.

The status was lifted on Wednesday evening after the agency recorded only minor tsunamis across nine regions in eastern Indonesia.

Jayapura city and Sarmi regency in Papua, as well as Sorong regency, West Papua, recorded only a 20-centimeter wave. Meanwhile, Talaud, North Sulawesi, and Halmahera, North Maluku, only saw waves of 5 cm and 6 cm, respectively.
