ndonesian fuel station owners are beginning to discuss the long-term impact of the growing number of electric vehicles (EVs), though it is not yet a major concern.

The Association of Fuel Station Owners (Hiswana Migas) chairman Rachmad Muhammadiyah said that the impact of EVs on fuel station revenue would depend on technological advancement and the government’s policy.

“The influence [of EVs] are not yet significant, the speed of their impact depends on technology and government policy,” he told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of Hiswana Migas’ national working meeting in Batam, Riau Islands, on Friday.

Rachmad said that the practicality of EVs is still being questioned if charging [EVs] at home requires seven to eight hours. He also said the government should consider environmental issues, especially related to large EV battery waste.

“What if the battery is damaged? From an environmental point of view, it is not good if batteries are bulky,” he said.

“Where can we dispose of them? Do we have a safe final disposal site for batteries?”

While EVs are gaining popularity in large cities such as Jakarta and Bandung, Rachmad said that their popularity had yet to have an impact on fuel sales. “There has been no impact at all [at fuel stations],” he said.
