T

he recent resignation of top officials of the North Sumatra provincial administration has cast a spotlight on Governor Bobby Nasution’s embattled administration, which has already been shaken by a string of corruption scandals since he took office in February.

Communication and Information Agency head Ilyas Sitorus, Financial and Asset Agency head Muhammad Rahmadani Lubis, Housing and Settlement Agency head Hasmirizal Lubis and Food Resilient Agency head Rajali, all at the Echelon II level, have resigned.

Ilyas was the first to resign on March 24. He decided to resign one day before he was to be named a suspect in an alleged corruption case involving the procurement of digital library software for the education agency in Batubara regency worth Rp 1.8 billion (US$108,303).

Rahmadani resigned on May 19. He did not reveal the reason for his resignation but when reporting to the Provincial Employee Agency (BKD), he said he would like to focus on education.

The latest resignations took place in October. Hasmirizal resigned on Oct. 14 and Rajali on Oct. 20.

Hasmirizal reportedly resigned because he was expelled by Bobby, who is also the son-in-law of former president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, from an event in Medan which was attended by Public Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar “Ara” Sirait in early October.
