he Health Ministry has declared an “extraordinary occurrence” (KLB) of measles across seven regions in South Sulawesi regions: provincial capital Makassar and the regencies of Luwu, Wajo, Sinjai, Bulukumba, Jeneponto and East Luwu.
Muhammad Yusri Yunus, head of prevention and disease control at the South Sulawesi Health Agency, said the ministry had issued a circular to conduct disease mapping, including in South Sulawesi, with regard to a national measles outbreak.
“Then the seven regions were designated as KLB for measles, although the status was declared by each city and regency, but the cases have spread nationally,” Yusri said in Makassar on Sunday, as quoted by state news agency Antara.
As of Wednesday, the provincial agency had detected 169 positive measles cases among children.
Yusri said cases of measles, which is a viral respiratory disease, had been increasing since 2025 up until March this year.
“Measles spread in just three regencies in December 2025,” he said, noting that the majority were initially recorded as suspect cases.
“They were declared positive after laboratory tests, but we have been running preventive measures since the suspect cases were detected,” he added.
