T

he East Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD) has moved a step closer to launching an inquiry into Governor Rudy Mas’ud’s policies, after a cross-party group of lawmakers secured enough backing to advance the proposal.

The push follows a wave of protests across the province over the governor’s alleged lavish spending, as the central government enforces austerity measures amid broader economic hardship.

21 of the council’s 55 members signed on Monday the motion to invoke the right of inquiry. Eight of nine parties in the DPRD support the move, while Golkar, the governor’s party and the largest faction with 15 seats, has withheld its backing.

Bahruddin Demo, head of Commission I, said the proposal had met the minimum threshold of support, securing backing from more than 10 lawmakers across factions.

“As it has met the administrative requirements, the proposal will be scheduled for deliberation by the council’s steering committee (Bamus) before being brought to a plenary session,” the National Mandate Party (PAN) politician said on Monday, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.

Under prevailing regulations, if approved in plenary, the council will establish a special inquiry committee comprising representatives from all party factions. The committee will have 60 days to carry out its investigation and is required to submit its findings to a plenary session.

Based on the report, the DPRD will determine further steps, which may include policy corrections or escalation toward a recommendation for the governor’s impeachment.
