View all search resultsndonesian haj pilgrims have arrived in Mina to begin the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual, marking the final stage of the annual Islamic pilgrimage as the government intensifies efforts to ensure smooth services amid scorching temperatures and logistical issues.
Haj and Umrah Minister Mochamad Irfan Yusuf said all Indonesian pilgrims had departed from Muzdalifah and entered Mina by 7 a.m. local time on Wednesday, completing the core phase of the haj pilgrimage from Arafah, Muzdalifah and Mina in Saudi Arabia.
He said extreme heat was the biggest cause of concern for the pilgrims, noting that the temperature reached up to 43 degrees Celsius in Arafah earlier in the week.
“Due to the temperatures, we have urged the pilgrims not to do the stoning ritual between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. for their own safety,” Irfan told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Deputy Haj and Umrah Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak highlighted that pilgrims would be expected to walk up to 7 kilometers daily during the stoning of the devil ritual, which is done by throwing pebbles at three pillars in Mina over several days.
“Since it’s physically challenging, elderly pilgrims and others with health limitations can delegate the ritual to other pilgrims,” Dahnil told the Post on Thursday.
