Dangdut singer Ikke Nurjanah will shortly deliver, for the second time, a guest lecture at Pittsburg University in the US.
Ikke, who first went to the university six years ago, will talk about the history and development of dangdut in the presence of students majoring in ethnic music. The activity is part of the cultural program “America seduced by dangdut 2016”, which will take place on Sept. 1-15 and in which Ikke will promote the musical genre that has made her famous in Indonesia.
“I will also hold a book review of my book ‘Dangdut Diary Ikke Nurjanah’ in which I tell the story about my trip to America six years ago,” said Ikke as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday.

She will also hold a discussion on the book at one of the world’s oldest libraries, the Library of Congress, in Washington D.C., as well as the Smithsonian Folkway, which houses recordings of ethnic and folk songs from around the globe. The program is held in cooperation with Sireedee Entertainment and the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) as a continuation of Ikke’s tour six years ago.
She was shocked the first time she learned that dangdut is appreciated elsewhere in the world. “While we are still struggling in our own country, appreciation in another country feels like a bonus,” said Ikke, whose full name is Hartini Erpi Nurjanah.
As part of the socialization, Ikke plans to invite street musicians to sing dangdut songs in Times Square, New York, so Indonesia’s music can be heard directly by the people there. (tif/kes)
