Indonesian films featuring in Singapore film festival

Jogjakarta-born 2017 Honorary Award recipient Garin Nugroho’s 19th feature, Memories of My Body, will be screened at the festival on Dec. 1.

ore than 100 films from 44 countries are set to be screened at the 29th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) slated to run from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9.

Among the films is Jogjakarta-born 2017 Honorary Award recipient Garin Nugroho’s 19th feature, Memories of My Body, which will be screened on Dec. 1.

The film tells the story of a young Lengger dancer transitioning into manhood amid Indonesia’s social norms.

Meanwhile Elinah, a film about the first pregnancy struggle of a young mother directed by Ninndi Raras, director and founder of Labide Studio, a production company in Yogyakarta, will have its international premiere at the Southeast Asian Short Film Competition. The film will be judged by an all-female jury.

The 2018 SGIFF is said to celebrate progressive developments in Asian cinema and diversity in filmmaking. A new SGIFF Film Fund will also be launched to support original voices in Southeast Asian films.

Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh is set to receive the 2018 Honorary Award, and the Cinema Legend Award will go to the famous Asian-American actress and filmmaker, Joan Chen. (iru/kes)
