Set in Manila, Trese follows the journey of supernatural detective Alexandra Trese.
Trese, the first animated horror series by film studio BASE Entertainment, is to air on streaming platform Netflix in 2021.
Adapted from a graphic novel of the same name created by two Filipinos, writer Budjette Tan and artist KaJO Baldisimo, Trese is set in Manila, where mythical creatures from Filipino folklore secretly live among humans. The series’ protagonist and supernatural detective, Alexandra Trese, finds herself facing an underground criminal world controlled by an evil supernatural being.
American storyboard artist and filmmaker Jay Oliva, whose stints include directing animated series The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 (2012), The Dark Knight Returns 2 (2013) and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013), has been named as the series’ director and executive producer, while BASE Entertainment founders Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson are the series’ producers.
Trese was named among upcoming anime titles that will be available on Netflix in 2021 and beyond, including Japanese sci-fi fantasy EDEN and survival horror game adaptation RESIDENT EVIL: Infinite Darkness.
BASE Entertainment is a merger of three film companies, namely Shanty Harmayn’s Salto Films, Aoura Lovenson Chandra and Ben Soebiakto’s Million Pictures and Singapore-based Tanya Yuson’s Kawi Content. The film studio centers on funding, story and intellectual property (IP) development and film distribution in Indonesia. BASE Entertainment’s first project is a series of films by celebrated filmmaker Joko Anwar in collaboration with Los Angeles-based Ivanhoe Pictures, Korean studio CJ Entertainment and Indonesian production company Rapi Films.
