Six Indonesian boxers will be vying for Olympic berths when they take part in a qualifying competition in Kazakhstan next month.
The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) said it was currently grooming 12 boxers in Semarang, Central Java, and Bali.
Only six will be fighting in the Kazakhstan event, which begins March 15, Pertina secretary general Pulo Pardede told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Pulo said seven boxers were training in Semarang and five in Bali.
Speaking about Pertina's long-term development plans, he said the organization was preparing to build another training center in Manado, which would train women's boxers.
"All three training centers are built to boost boxers' performance in the Beijing Olympics this year, the SEA Games in Laos next year, the Asian Games in 2010, the following SEA Games in Jakarta in 2011 and the London Olympics in 2012," he said.
Pulo said that to join this year's Olympics, the boxers could have won berths in the two previous qualifications in Chicago last November or Bangkok in January.
"We did not send any boxers to Chicago as we had the SEA Games at the time, while in Bangkok we sent two boxers but they failed," he said.
Should all six boxers fail in Kazakhstan, Indonesia would still be able to participate in Beijing through two wildcard slots, he said.
"Beijing's Olympic federation gives a wildcard privilege only to Asian countries."
Meanwhile, recently appointed Pertina chairman Setyo Novanto on Tuesday received boxing equipment from the State Ministry for Youth and Sports at the ministry's office.
The equipment included seven boxing rings, 280 pairs of ten-and eight-pound boxing gloves, 28 punching bags, 140 head protectors, 140 vitals protectors, 21 punching pads, 140 gum-shields and 14 stopwatches.
Junusul Hairy, who represented the minister in the ceremony, said the ministry expected the association to make the best of the equipment.
"This equipment will be distributed to our training centers in Semarang, Bali and Manado for preparing athletes in international events to come," said the chairman.(nkn)
