JAKARTA: Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni called on state Islamic universities across the country to provide access to higher education for people in rural areas.
Maftuh said in his speech which marked the launch of the technically advanced School of Medicine building at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) that the Islamic higher education institution had long served as "a catalyst for social mobility" for students at Islamic boarding schools that operate in rural areas.
"We know there is a yawning disparity between urban and rural areas in the country," Maftuh said.
Present at the ceremony were Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shiojiri, Banten Deputy Governor Masduki and Tangerang Deputy Regent Rano Karno, who is also a movie actor.
The Japanese government extended nearly 3 billion yen in loans to the university for it to build the school of medicine, which sits on a 5,000 square-meter plot. - JP
