ADANG: A code of ethics for new media, such as online media and blogs, needs to be formulated as the existing codes refer to mainstream media practices, a seminar heard Saturday.

A press council member from the commission of public feedback and code of ethics, Agus Sudibyo, said that new codes were needed during a seminar on press freedom organized by the Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) and the Tifa Foundation.

The seminar also discussed reports about journalists who, without the knowledge of the employers, hired someone else, usually freelance workers, to write for the journalists. The articles are attributed to the journalists' names, not the freelancers.

AJI's secretary-general, Jajang Jamaludin said the practice should be considered a gross ethical violation. He said that if a news article resulted from such a practice, it posed legal trouble.
