EDAN: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted Parapat, North Sumatra, on Wednesday, sending local people into panic.
No fatalities or damage to the buildings were reported in the incident that took place at 7:50 a.m. but panic gripped the people.
The local office of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Body (BMKG) announced that the epicenter was recorded 4 kilometers to the northwest of Parapat from a depth of 160 kilometers.
“The tremor was not strong and did not last long enough to cause damage,” Rifwar, a BMKG official, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday, adding that only people in Sibolga and Nias Island, to the west of Sumatra mainland, felt the jolt.
No aftershocks were recorded. — JP
