Nowadays, everybody is a photographer thanks to digital cameras, cell phone technology and billions of people communicating through photos via social media, but according to Time magazine, 'a great photograph rises above all the others.'
A good photograph is a powerful communication tool that does not need a caption or illustration but tells the story itself. The most difficult part of a photographer's job is being there when the event occurs. That is why there is the saying: 'When a moment is gone, it's gone.'
We have a small team of photojournalists who are there as most of the important events unfold. This year, we have selected the eight best photographs, which according to us are moving, provocative and inspiring, from a pool of thousands of photos taken by our own photojournalists.
All these photos, which are technically, artistically and visually strong, show powerful images. We see a protester escaping police tear gas in Jakarta, a war of fire ritual in Bali, or sumo wrestlers in Jakarta.
One of our photographers captured the beauty of coral reefs off Owi Island in Papua. Another memorable image shows business executive Totok Lestiyo escaping the chase of photographers and journalists after being questioned at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). More photos depict dangdut singers and people on their way to Idul Fitri prayers.
We promise more interesting photos next year, which is an election year.
