he Presidential Palace complex has not been spared from flood waters inundating Jakarta after heavy rains hit the city on Monday. Traffic in the Medan Merdeka Utara area, in front of the presidential palace, has been severely disrupted by the flooding.
As kompas.com reported, floodwater as high as 20 to 30 centimeters on Medan Merdeka Utara had narrowed to only one lane the main route drivers use to travel from Gambir to Harmoni ' both places in Central Jakarta. This crippled traffic in the area, especially in front of the Supreme Court building.
Some motorcyclists were determined to pass through the flooded area no matter what, only to have their vehicles stall on the road. Other motorists, such as bajaj (three-wheeled vehicle) drivers, chose to push their vehicles by hand to pass through the floodwater.
Only the Transjakarta integrated buses (APTB) serving the Harmoni area could still operate in the inundated zones in which the water levels covered almost the whole of the buses' wheels.
A number of public order (Satpol PP) officers are working in the Medan Merdeka Utara area, informing motorists that the street there is inaccessible to vehicles and assisting travelers whose vehicles have stalled on the road. (dyl/ebf)(++++)
