he former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Abraham Samad, escaped arrest on Tuesday after KPK leaders met with police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti.
'The KPK leadership has communicated well with the police chief to facilitate South and West Sulawesi police investigators, who suspended Abraham's arrest,' Antara news agency quoted KPK deputy chairman Indriyanto Seno Adjie as saying on Wednesday.
The police in Makassar, South Sulawesi, issued an arrest warrant for Abraham in connection to his alleged involvement in the wrongful issuance of ID and family cards to West Kalimantan woman Ferriyani Lim so that she could apply for a passport in the city in 2007.
Provincial police chief investigator Sr. Comr. Joko Hartanto said the arrest warrant had been issued based on subjective and objective considerations that Abraham would destroy evidence.
Abraham's lawyers refused to sign the arrest warrant.
The police's initial decision to arrest Abraham sparked strong protest from legal experts and law practitioners, who said that Abraham's case indicated that the police continued to criminalize the KPK.
Abraham and former KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto were investigated by the police after the KPK named then police chief candidate Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti a graft suspect, which was publicly announced by the two KPK leaders one day before Budi underwent screening by House Commission III on law on Jan. 13. (rms)
