ndonesia’s favorite in men’s singles, Tommy Sugiarto, nailed his first title in 2017 at the Thailand Masters, outclassing host Kantaphon Wangcharoen on Sunday evening.
Tommy defeated the Thai 21-17, 21-11 in 40 minutes at the grand prix gold tournament, which offered US$120,000 in prize money, in Bangkok.
“I needed to adapt to [my opponent’s style] in the first game because it was our first meeting. [Wangcharoen] played well but I managed to keep his self-esteem low in the second game,” said the world number 20 as quoted on the website of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) badmintonindonesia.org.
Indonesia is set to participate in the 2017 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Vietnam from Tuesday to Sunday. The competition is considered a kind of pre-event to the prestigious Sudirman Cup tournament in May.
Indonesia will face Malaysia and Sri Lanka in the Vietnam round robin.
Coach Minarti Timur said she would not pressure her young talents Hanna Ramadini and Gregoria Mariska to win in the women’s singles. “I just want my shuttlers to play with comfort so they can show off their best.” (nkn)
