A
plan to conduct surgery on the left eye of senior Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan has been cancelled as the eye has seen a gradual improvement, KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said on Thursday.
“Initially, surgery was planned on damaged tissue [in the eye]. As there was an improvement, no more surgery [is needed],” Febri said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Novel’s eyes were seriously damaged after he was attacked by two unidentified persons who splashed acid onto his face. The attack happened early morning on April 11 after he performed a morning prayer in a mosque near his house in North Jakarta.
After more than three months of treatment in Singapore, his right eye recovered. However, he lost vision in his left eye, which stopped growing new cells and "became white."
Febri said Novel left the hospital where he was being treated but still lived in Singapore to undergo regular check-ups.
The Jakarta Police have yet to identify Novel’s attackers, prompting questions over the force's investigation, especially given the possible political interests and high-profile individuals involved in the attack.

On Tuesday, National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian showed journalists a sketch of one the suspects drawn based on testimonies of two witnesses.
Novel, who is a former police investigator, was recently quoted by Time magazine as saying he received information that a “police general” had been involved in the case. (saf/bbs)
