wo Indonesian mixed doubles pairs will continue on their title hunt after securing quarterfinal spots at the 2017 BWF World Championships badminton tournament in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday.
World number six duo Praveen and Debby outclassed world number 15 Pranav Jerry Chopra and Reddy N. Sikki of India 20-22, 21-18, 21-18 in a rubber match that lasted one hour.
Meanwhile, the 2013 world champions, third-seeded Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, defeated non-seeded pair Sam and Chloe Magee 19-21, 21-16, 21-10 in their third round match at the Emirates Arena.
On Wednesday, three Indonesian favorites in men’s singles bowed out early in the second round of the 2017 BWF World Championships badminton tournament in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday.
World number 32 Tommy Sugiarto was defeated by world number 18 Anders Antonsen of Denmark by a score of 21-15, 21-9. Veteran Sony Dwi Kuncoro saw a similar scoreline in his loss to 2016 Olympics gold medalist Chen Long of China, who dominated 21-13, 21-9.
Meanwhile, a thrilling rubber match between world number 22 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and India’s Sai Praneeth ended with the latter coming out on top 14-21, 21-18, 21-19 after 72 minutes of battle.
It was a painful loss for Anthony, as he once led 18-21 in the third set, badmintonindonesia.org reported.
“I applied a fast-paced playstyle when I led the game. And then I started to lose two to three points. I realized that I got carried away by [Praneeth’s] style, which was slow in pace,” said Anthony. “I’ve learned that that I have to stay calm when I fall behind […].”
In men’s doubles, three pairs secured a spot in the third round scheduled late on Thursday Jakarta time.
Mohammad Ahsan and Rian Agung Saputro stunned top-seeded Chinese pair Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen.
“We were confident in beating them. We had nothing to lose,” Ahsan said as quoted by bwfworldchampionships.com. “We tried to enjoy our time on the court as the pressure was on them.”
When asked if defending his crown was on his mind — Ahsan won the previous World Championships with a different partner, Hendra Setiawan — he said: “Well, I’m aware that I’m defending the title, but I want to stay humble and play my best with my new partner.”
Meanwhile, Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi defeated Russia’s Evgenij Dremin and Denis Grachev. Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon battled in a three-game match to beat Taiwan’s Liao Kuan Hao and Lu Chia Pin.
