arious innovative themes were used to attract voters to the ballot box as the government is expecting at least 70 percent voter participation in the regional elections conducted simultaneously in 171 regencies and cities across the country on Wednesday.

One of ways to achieve this was by creating unique looks at polling stations (TPS).

Polling station working committee (KPPS) officers at TPS 04, Cibadak subdistrict, Astana Anyar district, Bandung, West Java, chose a Chinese theme to enliven voting day.

KPPS chairman Arif Yunara decorated the TPS to look like a Chinese village, with seven members dressing up as a Chinese emperor, a judge and a queen who people know from a popular movie about the Chinese kingdom.

“About 30 percent of the residents are of Chinese descent. That’s why we picked a Chinese village as the theme,” Arif said on Wednesday.

For this, they had to rent the costumes and prepare themselves three days prior to election day. “Hopefully voter participation here will be more than 80 percent,” Arif added.

TPS 021 in Cigadung subdistrict, Cibeunying Kaler district, picked the World Cup as its theme

The Bandung administration in cooperation with the local election body held a TPS competition, with cash prizes ranging from Rp 2.5 million (US$176) to Rp 10 million.

Bandung has 1,659,017 registered voters and 4,419 TPS’. (swa/ebf)
