eightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan secured the fifth gold medal for Indonesia at the 18th Asian Games at the Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, on Tuesday.

Competing in the men's 62 kilograms, Eko topped the leaderboard by lifting 311 kilograms in total – 141 kg in snatch and 170 kg in clean and jerk.

Witnessed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Eko put on a dominating performance until his third and final clean and jerk attempt in which he failed to lift 175 kg.

Eko's biggest challenger, Vinh Van Trinh of Vietnam, aimed to exceed Eko’s total lift score by setting his last clean and jerk attempt at 179 kg. The Vietnamese failed to execute, allowing Eko to finish first.

With the result, Trinh was awarded the silver while Adkhamjon Ergashev of Uzbekistan bagged bronze with a total lift of 298 kg.

“I am happy with the result as I was able to fulfill expectations,” said Eko, who has won a silver and two bronze medals at Olympic Games.

Eko also improves on his outings at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games,  where he won one bronze medal each.

Another Indonesia lifter, Muhamad Purkon of the men’s 62 kg category, finished seventh out of eight lifters after only lifting 282 kg.
