ndonesian powerlifter Ni Nengah Widiasih snatched a silver medal in the women’s 41-kilogram category of the 2018 Asian Para Games on Sunday. The Bali-born lifter was outclassed by Chinese Cui Zhe in the competition held at Balai Sudirman, Tebet, South Jakarta.

Ni Nengah lifted 97-kg in her first attempt, which gave her the lead. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old powerlifter failed while trying to lift 10-kg in her second and third attempts.

Cui, 32, won the gold after lifting 100-kg in her third attempt.

Meanwhile, Syrian powerlifter Noura Baddour won the bronze medal as she succeeded in lifting 91-kg.

Ni Nengah applauded Cui for her success. Previously in the 2016 Paralympic Games, Ni Nengah, who won bronze, trailed Cui, who bagged the silver medal.

“I apologize for not winning a gold medal for Indonesia. However, believe me, I did my very best,” she told the press after the competition.

Ni Nengah said she was shocked and sad that she failed in her last attempt as she was confident that her third attempt would be perfect. However, she respected the decision of the referees, she added.

She promised that she would bounce back stronger in upcoming competitions.

Next year, she will compete in the world championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, and the qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. (yan)
