survey has shown that the Gerindra Party and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) are the two parties currently preferred by Jakartans.

The survey was conducted from Jan. 18 to 25 by Jakarta-based pollster Charta Politika, and involved 800 respondents from districts within the Jakarta I, II and III electoral areas. They were asked questions that were aimed at revealing the political parties and the legislative candidates’ acceptability and electability.

“As we can see, Gerindra and the PDI-P dominate these three electoral areas,” Charta Politika research director Muslimin said on Monday.

In Jakarta I, which comprises districts in East Jakarta, 17.6 percent of respondents chose the PDI-P, 14 percent Gerindra and 9.8 percent the Golkar Party.

In Jakarta II, which comprises Central and South Jakarta and voters abroad, Gerindra was chosen by 27 percent of respondents, the PDI-P 24.6 percent and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) 8.3 percent. Muslimin, however, said they did not have respondents outside Indonesia due to technical reasons.

In Jakarta III, which comprises North and West Jakarta and Thousand Islands regency, the PDI-P was chosen by 29.4 percent of respondents, Gerindra 21.2 percent and the PKS 7 percent.

According to Muslimin, the PDI-P and Gerindra managed to get the most votes because they are both main parties that endorse president and vice president candidates — the PDI-P with Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Ma’ruf Amin, and Gerindra with Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno.

“We call this the coattail effect. The respondents’ support for certain president and vice president candidates has affected their political party preference too,” Muslimin said as quoted by kompas.com. (vla)
