Suspect had been hired to paint the victim's house.
man, identified as IN, 40, allegedly stole Rp 25 million (US$1,695) and a diamond ring from his employer at the House of Representatives housing complex in Joglo Kembangan, West Jakarta.
Kembangan Police in West Jakarta claimed on Thursday that IN had told them he used the stolen money on Monday to buy a JF-brand jacket and Converse sandals.
Kembangan Police chief Comr. Joko Handono said the suspect had been hired to paint the victim's house.
He said the crime had apparently been committed when the owner left the house to buy medicine at a community health center (Puskesmas).
"The house owner left the house to buy medicine, while the suspect stayed at home painting the sills. When the owner came back, the suspect was gone. He left the key with a neighbor," Joko said as reported by kompas.com.
Police said the house owner reported that he discovered the money and ring were missing when he opened the wardrobe where he kept them.
"The [accused allegedly] stole the money by rifling through the wardrobe belonging to the victim," he said.
IN is in police custody. (sau)
