KPU rejects request for Hanura Party chairman’s candidacy General Elections Commission (KPU) chairman Arief Budiman (middle) insists on Wednesday that the KPU could not allow Hanura Party chairman Oesman Sapta Odang to run for a seat on the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) if he does not resign from his position at Hanura. The statement was issued in response to the Elections Supervisory Agency's (Bawaslu) recent demand that the KPU include Oesman on the legislative candidacy list. (Antara/Galih Pradipta)

T

he State Palace has sent a letter to the General Elections Commission (KPU) requesting the latter to allow Hanura Party chairman Oesman Sapta Odang to run for a seat in the 2019-2024 Regional Representatives Council.

Signed by State Secretary Pratikno, the letter is dated March 22 but was only announced on Thursday.

In the letter, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo orders Pratikno to call on the KPU to adhere to a recent Jakarta State Administrative Court ruling that annulled a previous decree stating that Oesman did not fulfill the criteria for nomination.

KPU commissioner Hasyim Asy’ari told kompas.com on Thursday that his team had already responded to the letter.

In its reply, the KPU reportedly refused to acknowledge Oesman’s candidacy, adhering to a 2018 Constitutional Court ruling that bars any political party committee member from running as a Regional Representatives Council candidate.

“It’s not a matter of ballots [that have already been printed with Oesman’s name], but it is about [complying] with the Constitutional Court’s ruling,” Hasyim said. (mai)
