he start of the 2019 Toba Caldera World Music Festival in Bukit Singgolom in Toba Samosir, North Sumatra, was postponed on Friday after strong winds knocked down the main stage, damaging several instruments and props.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
“We cannot defy the forces of nature, but the show must go on,” festival director Irwansyah Harahap said on Friday afternoon before the opening act was scheduled to perform.
Not long after the musicians finished their set, the wind began to pick up and eventually knocked down the 8-meter by 12-m stage.
Repairs would be made and additional measures taken to anticipate similar bad weather, including by removing the roof and fabric background, Irwansyah said.
The festival, which is part of a wider effort to boost tourism in the area, was slated to run for three days.
Initiated by the Suarasama Lembaga Rumah Musik Institute, it is set to feature musical acts from across the region, including FieldPlayers from Malaysia, the Jade School Guzheng Ensemble featuring Prof. Xiaoxin Xiao from China, and Daniel Milan Cabrera and Deva Baumbach from Mexico.
Indonesian artists scheduled to perform include Ada SuaraSama, Kua Etnika, Mataniari (Toba Roots Music) featuring Marsius Sitohang.
