“The machine can destroy trash, and it only produces little pollution in the form of low particle smoke,” the facility owner, Fatahillah Karim told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
rowing satellite city South Tangerang faces similar incessant waste issues as the rest of Jakarta and its surrounding areas, but baby steps have been taken as a new waste processing initiative has emerged to manage solid waste piling up in the city.
South Tangerang in Banten province sends an average of 1,070 tons of waste daily to its landfills, according to data from the Environment and Forestry Ministry last year. Of the figure, as much as 615 tons go untreated, meaning it is not sorted or turned into other materials such as compost.
ABU and Co, a private integrated waste processing facility in Serpong, South Tangerang, has taken action to minimize and utilize solid waste. It initiated a zero-waste treatment model using a machine called a Multi-Benefit Waste Demolisher, or Musayama (Musnah Sampah Kaya Manfaat).
“The machine can destroy trash, and it only produces little pollution in the form of low particle smoke,” the facility owner, Fatahillah Karim told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
The zero-waste aspect was achieved because all output from the demolishing process can be utilized again.
Fatahillah said the machine used pyrolysis, which is the burning of materials in controlled chambers to decompose them.
He said the technology was not new, but that the machine in the facility had only been operating for one year and was still in its development phase.
