Papuan university student is feared dead after a group of nonindigenous Papuans attacked the Nayak student dormitory in Abepura district, Jayapura, Papua in the early hours of Sunday.
“It’s true, the students at the Nayak dormitory were attacked this morning,” said Yulianus Dabimabel, a Jayapura resident whose younger sibling stays in the dorm.
A video making the rounds on social media shows a group of nonindigenous Papuans making their way toward the Nayak dormitory, accompanied by some police officers. In the video, the nonindigenous Papuans can be seen throwing rocks and firecrackers at the dormitory.
The group, who reportedly call themselves Masyarakat Nusantara (Archipelago Community), was also thought to be involved in violence against indigenous Papuan protesters in Jayapura on Friday.
Linus Pabika, one of the students who lived in the dorm, said that several students were hit by projectiles from blowguns while at least four students were hit by sharp and rubber bullets.
“Sisilia Asso was hit by a sharp bullet,” Linus told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
He added that one student, Maikel Kareth, had died of bullet wounds at Abepura public hospital, while more than 10 people were wounded by blowguns.
