haos erupted at the 2022 World Cup qualification match between Indonesia and Malaysia at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium in Central Jakarta on Thursday as Indonesian soccer fans reportedly tried to attack Malaysian supporters during and after the match.

Indonesia’s national team successfully took the lead in the first half through goals from Beto Goncalves in the 12thand 39thminutes. However, things turn sour after the guest team scored an equalizer in the second half.

Indonesian supporters started throwing smoke bombs, bottles and metal objects at Malaysian supporters, causing one Malaysian supporter to be injured. Indonesian fans also climbed tribune railings and tried to storm the Malaysian fans’ area, while others in the north tribune tried to invade the pitch.

The referee was forced to halt the match in the 72nd minute when the scores were locked at 2-2, while officials and Indonesia’s national team members tried to calm the crowd down. The match resumed after five minutes and Malaysia’s Mohamadou Sumareh later hit the back of the net in 6th minute of overtime, seeing the home side defeated 2-3.

Chaos escalated after the match ended as Indonesian supporters threw various objects at Malaysia’s national team and its supporters, forcing officials to evacuate them though the player tunnel.

Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who came to the match, said on his Instagram that they were placed in an undisclosed area within the stadium while waiting for things to calm down before they could leave safely.

Meanwhile, riot police clashed with some Indonesian supporters who tried to invade the player’s changing room. Supporters threw objects at police officers, who responded by hitting rioters with clubs.
