T

he Jakarta administration planned to allocate Rp 618.9 billion (US$43.5 million) in development funding for its satellite cities next year, it announced last week during its deliberation of the 2020 budget priorities and preliminary threshold (KUA-PPAS) with the Jakarta City Council.

The funding is to be allocated to eight municipalities and regencies in West Java and Banten: Bekasi municipality, Bekasi regency, Bogor municipality, Bogor regency, Cianjur regency and Depok municipality in West Java, and Tangerang municipality and Tangerang regency in Banten.

Jakarta Governance Bureau head Premi Lasari said that the funding was for regional programs that supported the capital’s medium-term development plan (RPJMD). The budget was not yet fixed, because the City Council's budget committee was to discuss it further.

“The Jakarta RPJMD focuses on countermeasures [to address] traffic congestion, flooding, waste. At present, Jakarta is also pushing its mass transportation development,” Premi said on Sep. 27 as quoted by kompas.com.

The programs are designed by the administration of each satellite city in the Special Capital Region (DKI), which then submit a program proposal to the Jakarta administration.

“If the proposed programs fit and are in accordance with the Jakarta RPJMD, we will certainly provide [funding] assistance,” said Premi.

She added that the capital rejected most infrastructure development proposals for road networks, flyovers and underpasses, as it favored mass transit development over expanding infrastructure for private vehicles.
