Free Wi-Fi is being tested on trains serving the Jakarta-Bandung route.
tate-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) plans to provide passengers of Argo Parahyangan trains, which serve the Jakarta to Bandung in West Java route, with free Wi-Fi starting next year.
PT KAI president director Edi Sukmoro said that so far, the company had only test installed the free Wi-Fi on trains bound for Bandung, from Jakarta. However, it also planned to equip other long-haul trains with free Wi-Fi.
“We are trying to provide Wi-Fi on all routes so millennials [can enjoy the internet] on the road. [If they] travel for six hours, three hours, they won’t feel the time pass because they can enjoy [the ride] while using free Wi-Fi,” Edi said after the Asean Railway CEO’s 41th meeting in Bangkok on Tuesday.
“I think [the test] is the success of Argo Parahyangan. We are looking into it,” he went on, “We have not applied [the Wi-Fi facilities] yet since there are technical systems that we have to improve.”
KAI hopes to have Wi-Fi available on Argo Parahyangan trains by 2020, he said as quoted by kompas.com.
“Wi-Fi is not a luxurious facility anymore, because everyone needs it,” he added.
ASEAN Railway CEO or ARCEO is an annual meeting for leaders of train operators in Southeast Asian countries, during which they discussed technical, operational marketing, service, technology and development aspects of train operation in Southeast Asia. (gis)
