T

he greater availability of public transportation and the recent expansion of the odd-even traffic policy have made more people switch to public transportation, leading to a decrease in the amount of traffic at the end of this year, according to the Greater Jakarta Transportation Body (BPTJ).

The MRT Jakarta started commercial operations 0n April 1 this year and currently boasts 91,000 daily passengers.

LRT Jakarta, not to be confused with the Greater Jakarta LRT, which is to start operations in 2021, began running commercially this month.

The odd-even traffic policy, which was previously only implemented on Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta, was been expanded to 29 arterial roads in September. The policy allows only cars with odd-numbered license plate to drive on odd-numbered dates and vice versa.

According to the BPTJ, by the end of 2019 public transportation has become the choice for 32 percent of commuters, covering 67 percent of Greater Jakarta, while also improving the average vehicle speed.

As a comparison, in 2017, public transportation users only made up 24 percent of commuters in Greater Jakarta

BPTJ head Bambang Prihartono said that the surge came amid a massive increase of traffic in Greater Jakarta, from 47.5 million daily commutes in 2015 to 88 million in 2018.
