he newly established Supervisory Council of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has summoned the head of the agency’s employees association for commenting on the sudden dismissal of an investigator handling a high-profile bribery case.
KPK union head Yudi Purnomo Harahap was summoned and is due for questioning on Wednesday by the board after he released a statement regarding the dismissal of Rossa Purbo Bekti, a police investigator embedded with the antigraft body who was involved in the arrest of an elections commissioner.
“He [Yudi] was summoned by the supervisory council and is expected to be placed under investigation on Wednesday,” KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Wahyu Setiawan, a member of the General Elections Commission (KPU), was arrested on Jan. 8 in a sting operation for allegedly receiving Rp 600 million (US$44,000) in bribes to secure a seat in the House of Representatives for Harun Masiku, a politician from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), following the death of lawmaker Nazarudin Kiemas.
The KPK has claimed that Rossa, who was investigating Wahyu’s case, was transferred back to the National Police per the latter organization’s request, but the two institutions were at odds over the grounds for his dismissal, resulting in Rossa being barred from entering the KPK offices in South Jakarta.
Rossa is not known to be holding a position at the police headquarters, and has reportedly not been receiving his salary.
As the head of the employees’ association, Yudi released a statement defending Rossa shortly after his dismissal, stating that Rossa had done nothing wrong and should have been given the opportunity to stay at the KPK until his assigned term ended in September. Yudi said Rossa was not given prior notice of his termination.
