Amazon's cloud arm has been increasing its presence in Indonesia over the past few years as it competes with fellow tech behemoths Microsoft, Google and Alibaba.
mazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud service subsidiary of tech behemoth Amazon, launched on Wednesday its first Indonesia-based edge location in Jakarta as the company competes with other tech giants to capture Southeast Asia’s largest digital economy.
AWS wrote in Wednesday’s statement that the Jakarta edge location, which is a data caching server that extends a provider’s data center, aimed to reduce connection latency by up to 30 percent and improve network safety for the Indonesian market.
The Jakarta edge location marks AWS’ 10th point of presence in Southeast Asia, along with edge locations in Singapore; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Manila, the Philippines. Globally, the company has 225 points of presence across 47 countries around the world.

“Hopefully, the launch of the first AWS Indonesia edge location can support public and private organizations as well as businesses by providing services with high data transfer ability,” said AWS Indonesia country leader in a press statement.
Corporations and start-ups such as Kompas Gramedia Media, Halodoc, Tokopedia and Traveloka are said to be users of AWS and would benefit from the local edge location.
AWS adds to a list of tech behemoths including Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Alibaba Cloud, all of which are among the world’s biggest cloud service providers, that have been growing their Indonesian presence over the past few years in capturing the growing market.
