S

tatistics Indonesia (BPS) reported on Monday that the annual inflation was recorded at 1.66 percent in October, which continued an upward trend since July, as food, beverage and tobacco prices, as well as transportation fares, picked up.

The inflation rate in October was higher than both a month earlier and a year earlier at 1.60 and 1.44 percent, respectively. On a month-to-month (mtm) basis, the consumer price index (CPI) was up 0.12 percent in October.

“The 1.66 percent yoy inflation is the second-highest in 2021 after the one in May at 1.68 percent, when there was Idul Fitri,” BPS head Margo Yuwono said in a press briefing on Monday.

Despite the upward trend, inflation remained muted in Indonesia, especially compared with that in developed economies such as the United States and Germany, which recently recorded 4.6 percent annual inflation in October.

The transportation spending group, especially airfares, was the largest driver of October’s monthly inflation with a 0.4 percentage point contribution. The surge in transportation fares is in line with the rebound in domestic flight, train and ship passengers that started occurring in September.

The number of tracked departures for Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Banten, for example, was up 13.55 percent to 243 on Oct. 31 from Oct. 2, flight tracker service Flightradar24 data show.
