M

edalists at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris received billions of rupiah in cash awards from the government for their achievements.

In total, Indonesia won 14 medals at the Paralympic Games: one gold, eight silvers and five bronzes.

During a ceremony in the yard of Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo awarded Rp 6 billion (US$389,197) to each of the gold medalists, namely shuttlers Leani Ratri Oktila and Hikmat Ramdani. They won Indonesia’s only gold medal in the 2024 Paralympics in the mixed doubles’ SL3/SU5 category.

The government also prepared bonuses for other medalists, amounting to Rp 2.75 billion for silver medalists and Rp 1.65 billion for bronze medalists.

Among the silver medalists are boccia athletes Bintang Satria Herlangga, who won the medal in the men’s BC2 class individual event, and his compatriots Muhammad Syafa, Felix Ardi Yudha and Gischa Zayana, who won a silver in the mixed team BC1/BC2 category.

The boccia athletes also won two bronze medals, the country’s first ever medals in the sport, which is similar to lawn bowling.

“I am really happy and proud because in [the Summer Paralympics] the Indonesian contingent made history by winning 14 medals,” Jokowi said in his speech during the ceremony.
