View all search resultsAgriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said on Friday that domestic milk production could only cover around 20 percent of national demand, leaving the country to face a 4.9 million tonnes deficit.
Budget cuts led to a reduction in new irrigation networks planned to be built this year, from 10,000 hectares to 450 ha, as well as cuts in irrigation network rehabilitation from 45,000 ha to 16,000 ha and dam constructions from 16 new dams to only one dam this year.
An increase in imported cassava and tapioca has contributed to a fall in prices and a corresponding decline in domestic production of the root vegetable for at least 15 years, most noticeably in Lampung, a growing issue that the government is yet to tackle.
In response to a rise in low-cost goods shipped in from abroad, the government has temporarily suspended imports of sheep carcasses and lamb meat to reduce pressure on local farmers and protect the country’s livestock businesses.
