View all search resultsOn Wednesday afternoon, torrential rain on Mount Semeru triggered a massive lahar, a cold volcanic mudflow, along the Regoyo River in Lumajang regency, destroying a 150-meter embankment and a bridge.
Mount Raung, located on the border of Banyuwangi, Bondowoso and Jember regencies, erupted around 7:00 a.m., sending an ash column 1,500 meters above the summit. The thick gray plume reached an altitude of 4,832 meters above sea level and drifted west and northwest.
Heavy rainfall in Lumajang regency, East Java, has triggered landslides and mudflows of volcanic material, known as lahar, from the nearby Mount Semeru, cutting off several bridges, killing three people and displacing nearly 600 residents.
