Muhyiddin, who has long served at his side, emerged as the new premier backed by a bloc including key political parties that lost power in 2018 -- a move Mahathir called a betrayal.
Just recently we witnessed a change of government in Malaysia. It did not happen through elections but because a relatively small group of parliament members crossed the floor from the government camp to the opposition camp so that the latter had a majority in the Dewan Rakyat, the national parliament of Malaysia.
The political machinations that led to Mahathir's resignation were started several months ago with his knowledge, the aim being to block his former deputy and rival-turned-ally Anwar Ibrahim from taking power, more than a dozen sources told Reuters.
Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad will stand for the premiership on behalf of the former ruling coalition, the interim prime minister said on Saturday, less than a week after he quit and plunged the country into turmoil.
