View all search resultsSeven Papuan students and Indonesian People’s Front for West Papua spokesperson Surya Anta were arrested by the Jakarta Police on Friday and Saturday and are currently being detained at the National Police's Mobile Brigade detention center in Depok, West Java.
“Referendums are for occupied countries that are given the choice to be independent or to join with the occupying country. But Papua and West Papua are the legitimate territories of the Republic of Indonesia,” Wiranto said.
In a rare event, hundreds of emboldened Papuan students took to the streets in Jakarta on Wednesday, marching from the Army headquarters to the State Palace while carrying banned Bintang Kejora (Morning Star) flags, a symbol of the Papuan independence movement.
On Aug. 15, a clash occurred between Papuan students and mass organization members on Jl. Kalasan in Surabaya, East Java, as the students reportedly refused to raise the country’s red-and-white flag in front of their dormitory.
