Under the new regulation, the Environment and Forestry Ministry can provide legal aid and protection for environmental defenders who are under threat of any retaliatory actions for their activism.
Defending the environment is a precarious occupation in Southeast Asia, where kidnapping and abuse against human rights activists across all fields is as commonplace as businesses flouting environmental protections, often in cahoots with law enforcement.
"Ahed Tamimi was arrested on suspicion of inciting violence and terrorist activities in the town of Nabi Salih" near Ramallah, an army spokesman told AFP. "Tamimi was transferred to Israeli security forces for further questioning."
Human Rights Watch (HRW) this week said Thuzar Maung, 46, her husband and three children, were feared abducted "in a planned operation" on July 4, citing witnesses and CCTV footage at the activist's home in the Malaysian state of Selangor.
