To ameliorate its frustrations, Australia has actively sought to mold Indonesia’s foreign and domestic policies on this issue. However under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Indonesia appears to be distancing itself from Australia and devising policy solutions independently.
Ratifying an international convention may require the state to do more work, but further research is needed on the potential impacts on the state’s readiness in adhering to the international standards of human rights fulfillment, among other things. What are the current solutions for refugees and asylum seekers in Indonesia?
After weeks of granting aid to the asylum seekers, the administration decided to pull the plug. The city has asked the UNHCR to manage the refugees as the city wants the building to be vacant before Sunday.
The asylum seekers, including those from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan, as well as Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution in Myanmar, argued that they had stayed for too long in Indonesia.
