State-owned lender Bank Mandiri recently announced a major leadership shake-up to restructure both the Board of Commissioners (BoC) and Board of Directors (BoD). The changes come as lenders grouped in the Association of State-Owned Banks (Himbara) face mounting pressure from slowing financial performance, worsened by the banking industry's loan disbursement slowdown and increasing burdens from government-mandated programs.
Bank Mandiri projects that Indonesia’s gross domestic product growth will grow to 4.93 percent year-on-year (yoy) this year, while Bank Permata forecasts 4.78 percent. Both mark a slower pace from 5.02 percent last year.
The key to resolving the housing backlog is to take a balanced policy approach that addresses both the supply and demand side, more especially the latter, to provide more flexible housing options.
Hence, prioritizing downstreaming and industrialization can enable Indonesia to take full advantage of its resources and boost economic growth. This strategy, however, will require substantial investment in infrastructure, technology, human resources and a supportive policy environment.
Bank Indonesia (BI) has reiterated its use of triple intervention policies to stabilize the market, supported by large foreign exchange reserves, which stood at US$155.7 billion in December 2024. However, volatility persists, often following political events related to the US government.
Despite setbacks, sustainability initiatives will likely continue, driven by investor and consumer pressure which put environmental, social,and governance (ESG) concerns as priority, and long-term economic benefits like energy efficiency and renewable energy sources continue to be proven cost-effective, thus making sustainability initiatives attractive.
