A recent survey by the Health Ministry found that one in five medical residents suffered from depression, with 3.3 percent of the respondents, or almost 400 resident physicians, admitting to having thoughts of self-harm or suicide in the two weeks before the survey.
The recent suicide of a Diponegoro University medical resident in Semarang, Central Java, allegedly as the result of bullying, is only the tip of the iceberg, the Health Ministry has confirmed, while promising to take stern measures against the deep-seated problem found at medical education institutions across the country.
Observers allege that the school did not form an antiviolence task force, as mandated in a 2023 education ministerial regulation, which is tasked with preventing and handling abuse cases in educational institutions.
