View all search resultsThe Eastern Seram Police have named two people from Sabuai customary village in Maluku's Eastern Seram regency suspects for alleged vandalism. They were reportedly trying to protect a forest that they considered part of their society’s heritage from logging.
The government’s reluctance to submit its assessment has meant the deliberation of the bill has been put hold, leaving indigenous people vulnerable to eviction as President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo seeks to attract foreign investment, including into the extractive sector.
The map, which has a scale of 1:2,000,000, the first of its kind, consists of around 472,981 ha of forest lands that have been verified by the ministry and are in proper condition to be turned into customary forests.
