The government apparently sees no problem with local miners importing nickel ore for further processing at their smelters, with the APNI warning that the current expansion in smelters could quickly deplete domestic reserves.
This is not the first time Bahlil has criticized the electricity export plan. He made a similar statement opposing the idea in 2022, when he was still the investment minister, leading to a inter-ministerial clash over the clean power export plan.
Initially the government limited the licenses to coal deposits previously controlled by miners holding work contracts (PKP2B) because other minerals were considered more difficult to extract.
