Election watchdogs have questioned President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's move to significantly raise bonuses for General Elections Commission (KPU) officials, fearing it will lead to conflicts of interest in November’s simultaneous regional elections.
Secretary-general of the Independent Election Monitoring Committee (KIPP), Kaka Suminta, said that although KPU officials deserved a pay raise considering their heavy workloads, the president should have increased their bonuses after all of the regional election processes were over.
Speaking before thousands of PDI-P cadres during the opening ceremony of the party’s National Working Meeting (Rakernas) in Jakarta on Friday, Megawati said the cadres should be prepared to step out of the “comfort zone” to safeguard democracy.
With legal disputes over the 2024 presidential election behind them, political parties have turned their attention to November's regional elections as they seek candidates to endorse in key provinces, such as Jakarta, West Java, Central Java and East Java.
