View all search resultsOne key initiative under the plan to improve pilgrimage management is the construction of an “Indonesian Village” near Mecca’s Masjidil Haram Grand Mosque, designed to accommodate the large number of Indonesian haj and umrah pilgrims each year.
The government has agreed with lawmakers to lower the haj costs for this year by around Rp 4 million (US$248) in total, in a move Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said reflected President Prabowo Subianto’s eagerness to reduce the pilgrims’ financial burden.
To ensure the smooth implementation of the haj this year, the Customs and Excise Directorate General, as an agency tasked with checking baggage that passengers carry to and from abroad, has pledged to provide optimal service for haj pilgrims prior to departure or on arrival to Indonesia.
The deaths highlight a looming challenge for organizers as climate change takes hold in the region: the practice of requiring official permits for such services is stirring concern that unregistered pilgrims could increasingly be exposed to life-threatening temperatures.
